The Giant King by Kathleen Pelley
Some say that Rabbie, the carpenter’s son, is a dreamer; but Rabbie says he works from his heart, carving not what is, but what could be. When Rabbie goes to a distant town to sell his carvings, he finds the town besieged by a fierce and destructive giant. The townspeople despair, but Rabbie suggests that if the giant were treated like a king, he might behave like one. The message of this heart-warming fable is charming: that which is loved will reveal its loveliness.
The Giant King is an ideal choice for children in kindergarten through 4th grade. Its underlying themes of belonging, kindness, and peacemaking can be tied into many aspects of a school’s curriculum: social studies, reading, writing, art, research activities, and drama. The associated Educators’ Guide helps parents and teachers choose one or several areas to focus on depending on the child’s grade level and interest.
Family Movie Night
Mother Teresa: Seeing the Face of Jesus
Whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me. Mother Teresa always remembered these words of Jesus. She said that she saw the face of Jesus in the face of each sick and dying person she helped. She asked the whole world to look for Jesus’ face there, too. This movie presents the life and work of Mother Teresa with words and pictures that even the youngest child will enjoy. Children will happily learn that Mother Teresa was a person whose strong faith and trust in God helped her to make incredible changes in our world.
